This is an old post, but thank you! I never had occasion to share files from my Linux box to a Windows box, and thus never learned how it’s done. These days, Kubuntu is my primary OS, and I’ve been going for quite some time without sharing my MP3s to the [only remaining] Windows machine in the house.
Now I know that all I have to do is add an entry to the config file. Lo and behold, it works perfectly. Thanks a bunch!
Thanks for the helpful post, it worked like a charm on Kubuntu 9.10 64 bit. The confusing thing is that out-of-the-box you can get to public shares by typing the in the complete smb://frank/ but going to smb:/ in Dolphin shows an empty folder. The auto-discovery part requires creating a user.
all you need to create shared folders in samba’s config section like this by specifying a name in []. For example:
